South Auckland entrepreneur Taranvir Singh has acquired the New Zealand rights to property services franchise group Candoo, unveiling an ambitious plan to grow the business through acquisitions, regional partnerships and new pathways into entrepreneurship for young New Zealanders.
The acquisition marks the beginning of a new chapter for Candoo in New Zealand, with Singh assuming responsibility for the development of the brand, its national franchise network and its expanding portfolio of property services businesses.
Born and raised in Auckland, Singh has spent much of his life around the cleaning, franchising and property services sectors.
His father became a cleaning franchisee more than a decade ago, giving Singh first-hand exposure to the opportunities that franchise ownership can create for hardworking New Zealand families.
Over time, Singh became increasingly involved in the operation and management of the business, before broadening his experience across other cleaning and property maintenance ventures.
Although still a young entrepreneur, Singh has developed an understanding of franchising and service-based businesses that extends well beyond his years.
"Cleaning and property services have been part of my life for a long time," Singh said.
"I have seen my family and our income grow alongside the franchise business. When the right systems and support are in place, franchising can be a win-win. It gives people the opportunity to build something for themselves while contributing to the growth of a wider network."
Leadership roots in South Auckland
Singh attended Papakura High School, where he served as head student and was named dux of the school.
The achievements reflected qualities that have continued throughout his business career: discipline, leadership, determination and a willingness to take responsibility.
Singh said growing up in South Auckland had shaped both his commercial outlook and his desire to create greater opportunities for people from the communities around him.
"I am proud to be from South Auckland," Singh said.
"There is so much talent, ambition and entrepreneurial ability here. A lot of young people simply need someone to show them a pathway, believe in their potential and give them the systems they need to succeed."
Singh believes that business ownership should not be viewed as something reserved for people with extensive capital, established connections or decades of experience.
Instead, he sees service businesses as a practical entry point for motivated young people who are prepared to learn, work hard and develop their commercial skills.
"I want more young people to become involved in business," he said.
"With the right guidance, they can be fostered into a proven business model and given a genuine opportunity to succeed."
Building on Candoo's existing foundations
Singh said he was attracted to Candoo because the business already had many of the foundations required to build a significant national property services group.
These include an established franchise network, regional master franchisees, commercial contracts, proprietary operating systems and software, and the ability to provide multiple services through one national brand.
"There are some very good people already operating within the Candoo network," Singh said.
"There are franchisees who have worked hard to build their businesses, regional operators who understand their local markets and customers who already rely on the brand.
"Our responsibility is to support those people, strengthen the systems around them and create more opportunities for them to grow."
Singh said the existing franchisees and regional master franchisees would be central to the business's future.
"The value of Candoo is not simply in the brand name," he said.
"It is in the franchisees serving customers every day, the regional master franchisees developing their markets, the existing contracts and the systems connecting the network.
"My role is to build on those foundations and ensure the people within the business have the support and leadership they need."
Rebuilding credibility through action
Singh acknowledged that Candoo still has work ahead of it to strengthen its credibility and establish greater confidence in the New Zealand market.
He said the new ownership would not attempt to change public perception through announcements or promises alone.
"You do not build credibility by telling people what you are going to do," Singh said.
"You build it by following through, supporting your franchisees and consistently delivering a high standard of service to customers.
"We understand there is work to do. We will take it step by step and allow our actions and results to show people what the new Candoo New Zealand is about."
The immediate focus will be on strengthening franchisee support, improving operational consistency, building stronger customer relationships and ensuring accountability across the network.
"We want people to judge us by what we do from this point forward," Singh said.
"The opportunity is significant, but we know we have to earn the confidence of the market."
A new leadership structure
The new Candoo New Zealand operation will be led by a newly established team selected by Singh.
The existing New Zealand head-office management team will not transition into the new master franchise operation.
Singh said the decision was not intended as criticism of the previous team, but reflected his desire to establish a fresh structure aligned with his own vision, operating model and expectations for the business.
"This is a new ownership group and a new chapter for Candoo in New Zealand," Singh said.
"I have a clear vision for how the business should operate moving forward and the type of culture, accountability and commercial capability that needs to sit behind it."
The former New Zealand leadership will assist with the transition and handover before exiting the New Zealand operation.
James McGovern will continue in his role as Head of Growth for Candoo Global, focusing on the international development of the brand as its presence expands across multiple countries.
The new structure will allow Candoo New Zealand to benefit from leadership fully committed to the local market, while the global team focuses on international growth, technology, systems and the broader development of the Candoo brand.
Acquisitions central to national growth
Acquisitions will form a major part of Candoo New Zealand's next phase of expansion.
The company intends to acquire established cleaning, lawn and garden, building maintenance and other complementary property services businesses where there is a strong strategic and cultural fit.
Singh is already leading a number of acquisition opportunities following recent acquisition activity within the wider Candoo business.
Under the strategy, acquired businesses will be able to retain the expertise, customer relationships and local knowledge that made them successful while gaining access to Candoo's technology, systems, marketing capabilities and national service network.
"There are some excellent independent property services businesses operating throughout New Zealand," Singh said.
"Many have loyal customers and highly capable teams, but they may not have the systems, technology, capital or succession planning required for their next stage of growth.
"We want to work with the right operators, respect what they have already built and provide a platform that allows the business to go further."
Candoo New Zealand has set an aspirational goal of increasing its annual revenue by approximately $5 million to $10 million each year over the next five years.
The target will be supported by acquisitions, organic franchise growth, regional expansion and the continued development of the company's multi-service property maintenance model.
Singh said the strategy would remain focused on sustainable growth rather than revenue alone.
"The businesses we acquire need to be sustainable, the customers need to continue receiving a high standard of service and the people joining the network need to see a positive future within Candoo," he said.
"Growth is important, but it must be built properly."
Regional master franchise strategy gains momentum
Candoo will continue developing its regional master franchise model as another central pillar of its national strategy.
Regional master franchisees are responsible for growing the brand within defined markets, supporting local franchisees, developing commercial relationships and maintaining service standards.
The business has built strong momentum over recent months, with several new regional master franchisees joining the network and further regional discussions underway.
Singh said the model allows capable local entrepreneurs to build meaningful businesses while benefiting from the systems, infrastructure and support of a wider national organisation.
"New Zealand is made up of very different regional markets," he said.
"Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Canterbury and the provincial regions all have their own customers, industries and commercial relationships.
"We want strong local operators who understand those markets and can represent Candoo properly in their communities."
The national operation will support regional partners through centralised technology, marketing, training, financial systems, sales support and access to acquisition opportunities.
Singh said regional master franchisees would also play an important role in integrating acquired businesses and expanding the range of services available within each market.
Creating pathways for young entrepreneurs
One of Singh's key priorities is to introduce more young people to entrepreneurship through practical, supported opportunities within the Candoo network.
He sees businesses such as lawn and garden care, exterior cleaning and property maintenance as accessible entry points for young people who have ambition and a strong work ethic but may not know how to begin building a business of their own.
"I have personally seen the difference that a franchise business can make," Singh said.
"I have seen my family grow alongside the business, both in terms of income and opportunity. When the model works properly, the franchisee grows, the wider business grows and the customer receives a better service. It is a genuine win-win."
Singh said he wants Candoo to help young people develop practical skills in customer service, sales, quoting, marketing, financial management and leadership.
"A lot of young people have the drive and the capability," he said.
"What they often need is a pathway, a structure and people who are willing to help develop them.
"I want to see more young people brought into a proven business model where they can be fostered, learn the right skills and have a genuine opportunity to succeed."
Candoo is developing youth-focused programmes and plans to partner with community organisations to make entrepreneurship and business ownership more accessible to young New Zealanders.
Further details of those initiatives are expected to be announced as the new ownership progresses its plans.
A long-term commitment to Candoo New Zealand
Singh said his immediate priority would be to work closely with Candoo's existing franchisees, regional master franchisees and customers before fully implementing the wider growth programme.
He believes the company's systems and network provide a strong platform, but says the next stage will depend on disciplined execution, communication and a willingness to listen.
"There are already good people, good contracts and good systems within this business," Singh said.
"We do not need to pretend that everything must be rebuilt. We need to understand what is working, improve what is not and give the network the leadership and support it deserves."
For Singh, the acquisition represents more than a commercial opportunity.
It is also an opportunity to build a New Zealand business capable of creating pathways for franchisees, regional operators, employees, young entrepreneurs and established business owners looking for their next stage of growth.
"We know that credibility has to be earned," Singh said.
"We will earn it by supporting our operators, looking after our customers and making a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate.
"There is a lot of work ahead, but I am excited to get started and show New Zealand what the next chapter of Candoo can become."
